How To Stop Your Gravel Driveway From Spreading

October 15, 2025

A modern brick building with large windows features an affordable driveway made of gravel next to it. A black car is parked at the end, flanked by a wooden fence and some greenery. The scene unfolds under a clear, sunny sky.

With so many different materials available for driveway installation, it can be very difficult to know if you’re making the right decision – but one of the most popular choices (and one of the cheapest) is gravel.

You can keep costs down to a relative minimum with gravel, as repairs, maintenance, material and installation work are all less expensive than other options. Gravel also boasts excellent sustainable drainage properties, so you can make your hard landscaping more eco-friendly and reduce the flood risks at home, as well.

And, of course, gravel looks particularly attractive once it’s in place, providing a lovely rustic aesthetic that will help increase the curb appeal of your home.

However, there is one question that we get asked a lot here at London & Surrey Landscaping – and that’s “how do you stop your gravel driveway from spreading?”

Because the material isn’t set in stone, it can move around with the weather, by walking on it and by using it as a car park.

Of course, this is certainly something we will help you with and if we do any installation work at your house or place of business, we always make sure that measures are implemented to prevent this from happening.

But if you’re just looking for advice at this point, one of the best ways to stop gravel from spreading is to use edging pavers to keep it all in place.

You can also use gravel grids or geotextile fabric to really up the ante, while making sure that the depth of the driveway is sufficient to house the material in the first place.

Now, you may still see a few errant pieces of gravel here and there, but just get the brush out occasionally to sweep it all back into place once again. Easy!

Gravel driveways are particularly low maintenance and largely look after themselves, which is why they’re such a popular option… so give us a call today to find out more.
