Researching the various options available to you when considering a new driveway installation is wise, as there are lots of different materials to choose from and you need to make sure that your decision is the best one for you and your home.
One of the most popular options, however, is block paving, which can help transform the outside of your property, increase curb appeal, potentially add value and provide you with the practical space you need at the front of the house.
But how to know if it’s right for you? Here are some of the more frequently asked questions that we get here at London & Surrey Landscaping to help you make up your mind.

Is block paving expensive?
The price of your block paving driveway will depend on various factors, including the type of paving you go for, what kind of groundwork is required, labour, excavation and waste disposal.
All of this will be factored into your free no-obligation quote. We leave no stone unturned, so to speak!
Is block paving sustainable?
If you’re concerned about surface water flooding and the impact that hard landscaping can have on the environment (as well as flood risks for your property), rest assured that block paving is a sustainable choice to make.
Because the blocks are permeable, water is absorbed into the material so it can slowly drain away into the ground below. This prevents water from pooling on the surface of your drive, protecting it from the elements and reducing the risks of slips, trips and falls.
Can block paving be installed on a slope?
If your driveway is sloped, you can still have block paving installed – as long as it’s done professionally, with a deep sub-base and appropriate groundwork.
Can you install block paving in winter?
Block paving (and any other type of driveway) can be installed at any point during the year, but conditions do need to be dry. The sub-base has to be kept dry for long enough to allow for a stable, set surface.
Spring and summer can increase project efficiency, but it is certainly possible for driveways to be installed in autumn and winter.
How long does block paving last?
If you opt for a block paving driveway, you’ll be pleased to hear that it should last for as long as you’re in the property… as long as the installation work is sound.
You will need to clean it regularly and protect it from the elements, but it’s easy to remove damaged blocks or sections of driveway, which means you don’t have to replace the entire structure.
How do you maintain block paving driveways?
Quite simply, all you need to do is use a stiff brush or power washer to remove dirt, debris and grime that accumulates over time.
Reseal the edging every few years to protect it from the weather. If you see any cracks or loose/damaged stones, deal with these promptly to prevent the problems from spreading.
